Students who choose the latter have access to eight locations across the state and can opt for an accelerated format.

The school offers courses throughout the city, such as at the Lowcountry Graduate Center . This group in the capital comes together at the Columbia Technology Incubator the third Tuesday of every month for casual conversation and beer. It has also created a virtual lab called Soda City Battleground where ColaSec members can test their skills against one another in team competitions.
• ISACA SC Midlands Chapter : The Information Systems Audit and Control Association, now just ISACA, is a professional membership organization. Joining gets practitioners and students discounts to ISACA-facilitated certification review courses. In addition to these classes, the Midlands Chapter stays busy throughout the year by holding workshops, networking events and conferences on a monthly basis in Columbia.
• Myrtle Beach 2600 : 2600 meetings are a global occurrence that hit South Carolina in 2017. Every first Friday of the month, hackers and information security enthusiasts gather at SubProto , Myrtle Beach’s hackerspace, for laid-back conversations with likeminded individuals.
• SC Cyber : The South Carolina Cyber Consortium is a collection of academic institutions, businesses, government entities, and individuals united with the mission of defending cyberinfrastructure throughout the state of South Carolina. Based in Columbia, SC Cyber focuses on forging connections and improving communication in the region. The Palmetto State promotes three main annual events revolving around cyber security, each with a different focus and atmosphere.

• BSides Charleston : BSides has been going strong in Chucktown since 2012. There are two to five sessions occurring at any one time, and attendees choose between tracks based upon skill level and audience (e.g., government or private sector).

Unfortunately, South Carolina’s information security analysts are on the lower end of the spectrum nationally in terms of salary, pulling in $69,000 on average compared to a US-wide $93,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). A shift in title can increase that salary. According to  data from Indeed.com , security engineers in the state make $75,000, while IT security specialists can command just under $100K. In fact, Indeed shows security analysts making better than the national average as well, which may indicate that salaries are rising faster than BLS can track them. Salaries have already risen over six percent between 2012 and 2016 as other wages have stagnated, and future growth may be in store. Just look at the  deficit in Certified Information Security Managers . In 2016, South Carolina had 229 job postings requiring a CISM and only 101 CISM holders in the state. As it so happens, a CISM is the second-highest-paying IT certification in the US. As more residents emerge from college programs with the advanced skills needed to earn such certifications and claim upper-level jobs, salaries should go up.
